A Contemporary Combination of Accessibility and Style in a Century-Old James Bay Residence
The first thing you’ll notice when visiting this immaculate, century-old James Bay home is a long ramp connecting the front door to the sidewalk. Accessibility is a challenge for older homes but this renovation opened the entire group floor for ease of moment, exceeding the client’s expectations for what is possible in the home she had lived in for decades.
Interior designs by Robin Rothschild put a contemporary take on the turn-of-the-century character home. And a comprehensive renovation transformed the home for its multi-generational occupants.

Client objectives
The structure of this much loved home was suffering from continual flooding, and the aging homeowner was finding it increasingly difficult to navigate the narrow doorways and constricted spaces characteristic of a historic home. She wanted a renovation that would future-proof her home with an upgraded structure and improved accessibility, and accommodate her multi-generational family living in the home with her.
Project challenges
Significant changes were required to update the building envelope while maintaining the original characteristics of the home. Experience updating historic homes (see Canterbury for another example) for families who want to age in place was a big help in offering solutions for this homeowner to age in place.
