Coastal Cabana

Cabana-Chic: a stylish outdoor living space for entertaining and active living

This outdoor space was designed to entertain, featuring a fully-equipped kitchen and a multipurpose pool house including a gym, yoga studio and sauna. Flintstones overcame several zoning obstacles with creative solutions like locating the pool’s mechanical below grade to preserve space. Noteworthy features like a sensor-operated louvred pergola and tiered pool steps accommodate diverse needs, ensuring multi-generational use while maintaining a minimal aesthetic.

The homeowners requested a minimal, resort-inspired design which was achieved through a combination of materials (extensive limestone hardscaping unifies the home’s front and back) and fixtures (bespoke furniture is inspired by a West Coast cabana-lounge vibe). Large sliding glass doors connect the interior with the exterior seamlessly. They also wanted a seamless, single-level design for accessibility as they age and for their grandchildren.

The interiors received a full aesthetic update to meet the style of the new homeowners, who wanted cohesion between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Client objectives

When this custom-built house was purchased by the current owners it was under 10 years old. Moving from a waterfront property, the couple was used to having a view frame their living space. But the exterior of this home left much to be desired — the expansive backyard was empty. Their goal was to create a space that would integrate with their home and provide the indoor-outdoor experience they had grown accustomed to.

Project challenges

Flintstones overcame numerous zoning challenges from the municipality. Because this project aimed to maximize the lot’s usable space, it faced multiple challenges in the zoning process. Receiving a permit to build took a long time and expert knowledge of the municipality’s rules and regulations. To achieve the desired results, with stairs and landings within every possible square foot of hardscape allowance, Flintstones used topographical surveys to justify the proposed design.

Another challenge to this project was negotiating the desired minimal aesthetic with the requirements of all of its components. Because the poolhouse is a gym, yoga studio and sauna, it left little space for the pool’s mechanical room. We built the pool mechanical below ground so it didn’t use valuable lot coverage, on which the municipalities have many restrictions. A space was dug out and built below the poolhouse to store all the equipment without taking valuable lot coverage.
